The Masters 2019: Preview and predictions
By Luke Norris
And the winner of the 2019 edition of The Masters is…
You saw the picture above. You know where this is going so there’s no sense in wasting time with it. My official pick to win The Masters is Rory McIlroy. Yes, I picked him so many times last year and it didn’t work out. So when I did my preview for The Players Championship last month, I couldn’t bring myself to do it. And look what happened. So, yes, I’m going with the favorite here.
Maybe that’s boring or a copout but I haven’t seen this look in his eye in years and it’s frightening. When Rory is on, there’s nobody better in the game of golf right now. There just isn’t. And McIlroy is on his game right now and I think he’s ready to put his Masters mistakes behind him and make history. As I mentioned earlier, he hasn’t finished outside the top 10 all year and I think he puts four good rounds together this week and joins Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and his idol, Tiger Woods, as a Grand Slam winner.
However, if by chance Rory McIlroy can’t close the deal, we’re going to see some wonderful golf. It’s The Masters. That’s just what happens. People think I’m crazy when I tell them this but if you gave me the option of having to choose between watching the Super Bowl or watching Sunday at Augusta for the rest of my life, I’m choosing Sunday at Augusta every single time. That’s how much I enjoy this tournament and if it’s not Rory, there will be some other great story that comes out of this week. Maybe we actually do see Tiger win major number 15. Maybe we see Jordan Spieth find the game that made him the top player in the world at one point. Maybe Phil can summon some magic once again. You’ll notice I haven’t mentioned defending champion Patrick Reed at all. Maybe he can go back-to-back. Whatever the case may be, in my humble opinion, it’s the best week of the year in golf and it’s going to be great.
But seriously, Rory McIlroy wins The Masters at 14-under. Book it.
