3. Secondary Issues

Last season, the Chiefs lived off their offense. In most games, Kansas City could always rely on the offense to carry it to another win, and could pretty easily outscore any team that they played against. All of the losses that the Chiefs suffered last season were games that were extremely high-scoring. While some may blame Mahomes for some of the turnovers that he had in the losses that the Chiefs suffered, most of the blame falls on the defenses’ shoulders.

One of the areas that the Chiefs really suffered in was the secondary. The secondary was diced up basically every week as they had the second-worst passing defense in the league, only better than the Cincinnati Bengals. They ended up allowing an average of 405.5 passing yards per game.

Even though the Chiefs made a big splash by bringing in Tyrann Mathieu from the Houston Texans, the secondary remains weak. Kendall Fuller and Bashaud Breeland are fine, but there’s no shutdown corner on the outside. Because the Chiefs failed to nab any of the top cornerbacks in free agency, it might be smart for them to target that in the draft. Their porous passing defense came back to haunt them in big time games last season, and if they want to win those, they will need their secondary to be much better.
