MLB rumors: 5 prospects who can help the Tigers in 2019
1. OF Daz Cameron
One of the players acquired from the Astros via the Justin Verlander trade in 2017, as he completed a strong second half of that season (.341, .960 OPS, 41 RBI from July on), Cameron went from High-A to Triple-A in Detroit’s system last year.
Cameron stole 24 bases overall last year, and his best numbers at the plate came in Double-A (.285/.367/.470 slash-line, 22 extra base hits, 12 steals and 35 RBI over 226 plate appearances). He followed his 2018 minor league campaign with a good showing in the Arizona Fall League (.342, .903 OPS and nine stolen bases) and a good spring (.357 batting average with two home runs and seven RBI).
So far in Triple-A this season (five game and 25 plate appearances entering Wednesday), Cameron is hitting .300 with a home run, five RBI and five runs scored. He seems like a carbon copy of his father, former major leaguer Mike Cameron, as a player who is the sum of his parts more than having any incredibly elite tools. But that profile can yield a long major league career, and Cameron should be patrolling the Tigers’ outfield before too long in 2019.
