Buffalo Bills

Charles Clay is no longer a Buffalo Bill, having signed with the Arizona Cardinals this offseason. That left a void at tight end for the Bills, so they brought in Tyler Kroft, who was a free agent from the Bengals. Kroft did some decent things for the Bengals when Tyler Eifert was out with injury, but he is better suited to be a backup tight end.

That leaves the top of the depth chart wide open in Buffalo, and with Josh Allen seeming to take steps in his development at the end of last season, the Bills could certainly use an offensive weapon for him in the middle of the field. They tried to address that need during free agency, signing both John Brown and Cole Beasley, and those additions should certainly help, particularly in moving the chains. But those guys won’t be much help with blocking.

Enter T.J. Hockenson or Irv Smith. While Fant would be a fantastic addition to teams seeking a move tight end to primarily be a pass catcher, the Bills seem to need a do-it-all tight end who can block on the end of the line and can also go out for passes effectively. Hockenson is the best in this draft by a long shot in that capacity, so there is a real possibility the Bills grab him with the ninth-overall pick. If not, perhaps they package their second and their two fourths to get back up into the first round and take Smith. Either would greatly improve their offense as a whole and would be worth the investment.
