2. Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks always seem to be on the periphery of the conversation for major free agents and big trades, but the timing seems right to make a significant move or two this offseason. Coming off a 33-49 season, they have plenty of cap space ($52.15 million, third-most in the league) to be a player in free agency.

In terms of a trade for Conley it’s pretty straight forward for Dallas, with the likely sweetener of a first-round pick this year or down the road to get Memphis’ attention.

The Mavericks get: Conley

The Grizzlies get: Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee

A backcourt pairing of Conley and Luka Doncic, along with the return of Kristaps Porzingis, would instantly push the Mavericks into the playoff conversation in the West next season. That trio would be supplemented with a likely top-10 pick in June’s draft, assuming it’s not included in the deal for Conley, with room to add a notable free agent or two. Retaining Dwight Powell is also on the radar, but he has a player option for next season and may command a fair amount on a multi-year deal on the open market.

Memphis will probably prefer younger players and/or expiring contracts in a deal for Conley. Getting Hardaway and Lee don’t fit that mode, and Hardaway is set to undergo offseason surgery for a leg injury he seems to have played with all season. But the Mavericks have to be in the mix to make a deal for Conley anyway.
