Regrading the 2018 NFL Draft: Colts, Browns and Ravens did best
Dallas Cowboys: B+
Leighton Vander Esch and Michael Gallup are the two best pieces in this class. Vander Esch looks like a potential Pro Bowler and Gallup stepped up to become the team’s No. 2 wideout as a rookie. Both selections provided Dallas with excellent value.
The inability of Connor Williams to really find a home on the Cowboys’ offensive line costs Jerry Jones and company the A. It’s too early to give up on him as a player, but his rookie year was not encouraging.
New York Giants: C
Saquon Barkley is a terrific running back, but there’s no logical argument for the Giants taking him at No. 2 overall. At best, that can be viewed as a neutral acquisition given the money Barkley will earn on his rookie deal.
In fairness to GM Dave Gettleman, Will Hernandez, Lorenzo Carter and B.J. Hill all enjoyed really good rookie seasons. It’s a shame their quality play was obscured by the mistake of drafting Barkley at No. 2.
Philadelphia Eagles: B
The Eagles have a tough class to grade since it only includes five players. Fortunately for Philadelphia, Dallas Goedert and Avonte Maddox both played like quality starters during their rookie campaigns.
On the flip side, Josh Sweat really failed to make an impact when he was on the field. Neither Matt Pryor or Jordan Mailata played at all. Even so, hitting on 40% of your total draft is enough to earn a solid B.
Washington Redskins: B-
Losing Derrius Guice to injury after a very promising preseason really hurt this class overall. Fortunately, Da’Ron Payne did give the Redskins reasonable value at No. 13. He looks like a guy they can count on for years to come.
Outside of that, the results were pretty bland. Only Geron Christian really looks interesting of the guys who were picked on Day 3. The Redskins need to do a better job in 2019.
