1. Johnathan Abram
The Colts secondary could stand to add a healthy dose of swagger. Abram has as much of that as anyone in this year’s draft class. Indianapolis needs a cornerback worse than a safety, but they have holes in their roster at both positions.
Abram would give Indianapolis the best safety they’ve had since Bob Sanders. He’s not the biggest player to patrol the final third of the field, but he hits like a linebacker. Perhaps more importantly, he also has the speed and instincts required to cover NFL wideouts.
His versatility makes him a great scheme fit for the Colts. The only question Ballard needs to answer is whether or not he believes this is the right spot in the draft to select a safety. There’s a reasonable argument to be made that a slightly lesser prospect could be had in Day Three.

Don’t expect the Colts to go that way. If they get a chance to draft Abram and fill a big hole in their defense they’ll very likely pull the trigger. He could easily turn into the next great draft pick by Ballard and his talented front office.
