3. Manchester United’s poor run continues with loss to Everton

Much was made of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s interim time in charge of Manchester United as the Norwegian manager brought some flair back to a squad that was desperately lacking it. Now that he’s got the position on a full-time basis it seems like he’s under more pressure to get results but United fans need to understand that this is still a work in progress.

United went out of the Champions League to Barcelona in midweek. The Catalan side were initially helped by some mistakes from United but equally they were just far too strong for Solskjaer’s men. Now the objective for the new United boss is to make sure his side are competing in the Champions League next season.

In order to do this Manchester United will need to fend off Arsenal and Chelsea in order to secure fourth place. That is possible provided results go their way and they can get back to winning ways themselves.

That mission begins this weekend with a tough trip to Goodison Park to face Everton. The Toffees have had what feels like an average season but in actual fact they’re very close to being the “best of the rest” outside of the top six.

Marco Silva’s team have failed to flatter at several points this season despite having some very good players in the squad. However, a seventh-place finish would provide Everton with a great platform to make their move on the top six next season.

If they want to be competitive against the top six they need to win or draw their home games against them though. This weekend there’s a realistic possibility that Everton can get a result against a tired Manchester United side.

United will come to Goodison looking to restore some pride and find their form again but Marco Silva’s side will run out 2-1 winners in this match-up.
