3. Daniel Jones
The former Duke quarterback is another player who seems to be on the rise as the draft approaches. That’s not a surprise given the way signal callers are typically coveted by teams. No position inspires more trades during the draft than quarterback.
Jones hopes that historical trend holds true when it comes to his draft. Some people believe he’s a prime target for the Redskins at No. 15, but that’s a real jump from where his stock was just a few weeks ago. It’s equally possible that Washington passes on him and he falls out of the first round altogether.
Teams that like Jones point to his size, arm strength and better than expected mobility. He’s exactly the sort of quarterback who can really put on a show for a team during a private workout. He was well coached in college by David Cutcliffe.
However, his college tape just never seems to live up to those individual skills. He wasn’t blessed with a ton of talent around him in Durham, but he didn’t seem to have the talent to carry his team very often. That should be a major concerns for scouts whose teams are contemplating making a big bet on Jones.
The smart money says Jones will go in Round 1, but it’s not a lock. If his slide builds momentum, he could face a long wait to find his NFL home.
