1. New England Patriots

The enemy of the majority of the NFL has quietly put together an impressive draft pick catalog. Notorious for allowing pending free agents to walk, Bill Belichick and the rest of the New England Patriots’ decision-makers have stockpiled four compensatory picks in this year’s draft. Another four of them have come via trade. To highlight some key selections:

  • Round 2: 56, 64 overall
  • Round 3: 73, 97, 101 overall
  • Round 7: 239, 243, 246, 252 overall

The seventh-round picks are nice but much like with Oakland and New York, they’re unlikely to be used as anything more than fillers. The meat of the draft for the Patriots comes in rounds two and three, where the franchise currently holds five total picks.

Per the norm, there aren’t many holes in this Patriots team. Tom Brady could benefit from having another weapon or two to throw to but aside from that, the offense is in good shape once again. On the defensive side of the ball, an impact player along the defensive line would go a long way to supporting a defense that’s ranked in the top 10 in fewest points allowed for three consecutive seasons.

Belichick has everything down to a science at this point. One of the most brilliant minds in NFL history, don’t expect any head-scratching moves to be made by New England this weekend. With that said, don’t be surprised to see the team swap a pick or two. Having appeared in four of the last five Super Bowls, it’s hard to question whatever goes on in that draft room.
