Denver Broncos

Grade: B

Best pick: Dalton Risner (OT, Kansas St)

Questionable pick: Drew Lock (QB, Missouri)

Sleeper pick: Dre’Mont Jones (DT, Ohio State)

John Elway winds up with the quarterback he had reportedly long been after in Missouri’s Drew Lock, but it still feels like an odd decision. It could be that I’m lower on Lock than some, but I have a hard time seeing him develop into a franchise-type quarterback at the NFL level, which seems like a bit of a waste for a second-round pick. The Broncos traded for Joe Flacco for a reason, so why spend a pick on a player that makes it look like you’re already ready to replace him? We’ll see if Lock’s big arm translates to the NFL but with his inconsistency is a concern, especially highlighted when he was without his top receiver Emmanuel Hall on the field

On a positive note, Dalton Risner was one of my favorite linemen in the draft class and is an excellent addition to the Broncos up front, whatever position he ends up playing. Risner plays with excellent intensity and was posted some of Pro Football Focus’ best pass protection numbers over the last three seasons. Being able to get a player like that in the second round is outstanding value in every sense of the word.
