Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Lavonte David and Devin White

Speed, speed and more speed, that is what this pick is about. Devin White was the fastest linebacker at the NFL combine with a 4.42 40-time. And he boasts impressive movement speed when shifting between gaps to close in on runners. White was widely regarded as the top inside linebacker and the Buccaneers decision to take White and pair him alongside Lavonte David will pay dividends in the Bucs’ run defense next season. Lavonte David led the Bucs’ with 120 tackles last season, and while the addition of White may slightly eat into this total, the combination of the two players will make opposing offensive coordinators think twice about running the ball against this team.

On top of that, David ranks as one of the better linebackers in coverage in the NFL. While this is not White’s strength, Lavonte David should make up for the weakness in this area and provide one of the best 1-2 punches at the linebacker position in the league. With White patrolling the field looking to stop the run and David dropping in pass coverage as well as aiding against the run, this should be an exciting fast-paced duo to watch.

Next: Best NFL player from each state

Bruce Arians’ decision to make this pick was likely impacted by the departure of Kwon Alexander this offseason. Losing a player like Alexander can severely impact a defensive unit, but Arians found a way to not just replace his production, but upgrade at the position as well. The Bucs filled a need and drafted the best available player at the same time, something that not every team can accomplish in the NFL draft. Keep a close eye on Devin White next season as his name may begin to pop up in Defensive Rookie of the Year conversations early on.
