NFL Free Agency: top team-player fits post-NFL draft
2. Ziggy Ansah and Buffalo Bills
Ansah may very well be the top free agent available. Teams have been waiting to see if his medicals check out following offseason shoulder surgery which accompanied his placement on injured reserve last December. It’s a concern, of course, that he has not been able to stay healthy for the last three seasons; and that he is now over 30 years old. But, his upside is still very present, especially when side-by-side with other stars on the line.
The Buffalo Bills had their wildest dreams come true when Houston star defensive tackle Ed Oliver was still on the board when they selected with the ninth pick. Oliver was a matchup nightmare on the inside for offenses in college, and will likely continue to be one at the next level. He’s big, quick, strong – and projects to perhaps be the star of this draft class.
That being said, the Bills did not address their lack of an edge rusher in the draft, instead opting to take former Sooners offensive tackler Cody Ford in the second round, and used draft capital to make a move up for that selection, and also to move up in the third round for a tight end.
The Bills are one of the teams who has the cap space and the need to acquire Ansah before training camp begins. The Bills addition of Oliver to a defensive line already featuring Jerry Hughes is a solid start. However, if Buffalo wants to continue to build its defense, while its offense is developed around 2018 first-round pick Josh Allen at quarterback, adding a formidable presence like Ansah is a great start.
