The Champions League returns on Wednesday with Barcelona hosting Liverpool at Camp Nou. Both clubs entered the competition as two of the favorites but only one club will advance to the final. Barcelona won La Liga again this season. The Catalan side advanced to the semifinal after easily getting past Manchester United. Liverpool are one point behind Manchester City with two games remaining in the Premier League season. The Reds got the easiest draw and destroyed Porto over the two legs.
Barcelona are looking to be the first club to win the European treble since 2014-15 when Barcelona also captured La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League titles. Ernesto Valverde’s team have lost only four games in all competitions and have lost only once at Camp Nou. Lionel Messi is again having an incredible season. Messi has driven the Barcelona attack, scoring 46 goals and adding 22 assists this season. Philippe Coutinho has largely been a disappointment since joining Barcelona from Liverpool for €135 million. However, the talented Brazilian could be a difference maker over the two legs.
Liverpool have only lost six games in all competitions this season. The Reds have lost only one game since the calendar flipped to 2019 and have won 10 straight games. Virgil van Dijk was named Premier League player of the year and will need a strong performance against Liverpool. Van Dijk and the Liverpool defense will have to stop Messi if Liverpool are going to reach the Champions League final for the second straight season. Up front, Liverpool will rely on Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. The duo have combined for 49 goals this season. However, Jurgen Klopp might be without Roberto Firmino who is dealing with an injury. If Firmino cannot play, Klopp can replace him with Daniel Sturridge or he could shift Salah shift inside and Xherdan Shaqiri will start on the wing.
