MLB Power Rankings: Yankees keep winning, Vlad Jr makes his debut, and the Dodgers remain hot

8. San Diego Padres, 17-13, tied for 2nd in the NL West (ranked 6th last week)
The Padres offense is slumping at the moment, scoring runs in bunches or not at all over the last 10 games. However, their pitching has been good enough to guide them to a 6-4 record over those 10 games, with starter Chris Paddack flashing the top prospect stuff many expected from him. San Diego’s bullpen is one of the better groups in baseball, with a great mix of guys who can induce soft contact or have the elite swing and miss stuff. But even with the great arms the Padres have to offer, the offense needs to pick it back up, and with Fernando Tatis Jr. likely heading to the IL they’ll need that turnaround to happen fast to stick in the top 10.
7. Milwaukee Brewers, 17-14, tied for 2nd in the NL Central (ranked 4th last week)
The Brewers rotation outside of Zach Davies hasn’t been great, adding veteran lefty Gio Gonzalez helps for the moment but the real boost would come from a healthy Jimmy Nelson. The 29-year-old Nelson is expected to return to the rotation sometime in May after missing all 2018 with Tommy John surgery. However, the offense is missing reigning NL-MVP Christian Yelich who sat out the last two games with a sore lower back. Hopefully, the slugger can avoid the IL, but if he has to miss some time Milwaukee might be in some trouble with the Cardinals and Cubs pulling ahead of them in the division this week.
