After taking plenty of criticism about where they drafted Daniel Jones, the New York Giants did their rookie quarterback no favors with a sad hype video.

New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman would have us believe quarterback Daniel Jones would not have been available with their second first-round pick, so they had to take him at No. 6. Subsequent responses to that notion dismissed that two teams wanted Jones before pick No. 17, but Gettleman is trying to justify taking Jones where he did and has stretched his credibility in the process.

If Jones eventually steps in for Eli Manning and plays well, then the Giants will have been right. But the broad early view says taking a quarterback that was a fringe first-round talent was a reach, and Gettleman has even suggested Jones may sit for three years.

The Giants, like the rest of the league, held their rookie minicamp this past weekend. It was the first chance for Jones to be seen in uniform, which was interesting in that respect, but the actual value of the minicamp practices beyond that is debatable at best.

Still, the Giants did their rookie signal caller absolutely no favors with a sad hype video showcasing his apparent rookie minicamp highlights.

Jones is of course seen throwing, or “dropping dimes” as the Twitter description says with the bulls-eye emoji for emphasis if we needed it.

But the majority of Jones’ passes in the video were short, check-down style throws against no defense. If those were his best throws of rookie minicamp, and it’s safe to assume they were if they were put together for a highlight video by the Giants’ social media team, it was a fairly sad display.

As the intensity and importance of practices ramps up, Jones will have an opportunity to look better and it can be assumed he will. But the Giants have set a low bar for him to clear here in May, perhaps not accidentally.
