3. Joe Flacco

Apparently John Elway and company didn’t call anyone in Baltimore to ask about Flacco. There’s a reason the Ravens elected to dump him in favor of Lamar Jackson. They understood that building an offense around a 34-year-old quarterback who isn’t that accurate is a poor plan in today’s NFL.

The Broncos, in sharp contrast, believe in Flacco’s abilities enough to pay him just over $22 million this season. It’s possible he’ll serve as an upgrade over Case Keenum, but he doesn’t have the ability to really elevate the Denver offense.

The only good news for Broncos fans is that their franchise isn’t overly committed to Flacco in terms of years. Moving up to draft Drew Lock absolutely put Flacco’s career in Denver on the clock. It will be a major surprise if the rookie isn’t pushing Flacco for playing time down the stretch.

The best the Broncos can reasonably hope for out of Flacco is that he can keep them in playoff contention until late in the season. Despite his questionable accuracy, he still showcases above average arm strength. That should come in handy late in the season if Denver experiences some rough weather.

The bottom line here is that the Broncos are overpaying for one year of Flacco. At least that’s what their fans should hope they’re doing. Anything else would just compound the error that is his current contract.
