2. Derek Carr

Cynical NFL observers might point out that Carr deserves every penny of his current salary to put up with Jon Gruden for another season. There’s some merit to that line of thinking, but $25 million is a lot of money to invest in such an inconsistent quarterback.

Carr’s biggest issue last year was holding on to the ball too long. He certainly didn’t have great receivers to work with, but he still managed to eat 51 sacks on the campaign. That’s bad for Carr’s health and the Raiders offense.

The combination of the 27-year-old’s ineffectiveness and his large contract was a big reason why the Raiders were linked with strong interest in Kyler Murray before it became clear the Cardinals were going to take him at No. 1. It wouldn’t surprise anyone around the NFL if Oakland starts to shop for a new quarterback of the future in the upcoming offseason.

At best, Carr profiles as one of the weakest starting quarterbacks in the league. The Raiders are currently paying him as much as the Saints are compensating Drew Brees. Time is ticking on Carr in Oakland and when he’s jettisoned, it won’t be a controversial decision by Gruden and company.
