5 most overpaid quarterbacks in the NFL
1. Eli Manning
Dave Gettleman thinks the idea that Manning is overpaid is a total “crock.” Of course, he also believes that Daniel Jones deserved to be the No. 6 overall selection in the draft. Also, he’s the same GM that selected a running back with the No. 2 pick in the previous year. Suffice it to say, Gettleman’s point of view on Manning’s compensation isn’t an authoritative source on the subject.
In fairness, Manning was a better player in 2018 than he was in 2017, but much of that progression can be attributed to the impact of Barkley on the offense. The Giants offense still struggles mightily to throw the ball downfield with Manning at the helm.
At 37 years of age, the two-time Super Bowl winner just isn’t the same player he was back in his prime. He was never one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but he did profile as a top-20 signal caller in his younger days. Currently, he’s very fortunate the Giants are still allowing him to be their starter.
Presumably, this will be the last year of his reign in the Big Apple. The front office should be happy to shed his $21 million per season salary from their books moving forward. The only bad news for Giants fans is that the end of Manning’s time will coincide with the beginning of Jones’ tenure leading the offense. That doesn’t change the fact that Manning is the NFL’s most overpaid quarterback in 2019.
