Pittsburgh Pirates: Great Pierogi Race

Major League Baseball is known for their fun races in ballparks, from the Washington Nationals Presidents Race, to the Milwaukee Brewers Sausage Race. In Pittsburgh, there is another fun race that occurs during the end of the fifth inning, the Great Pierogi Race.

Starting in 1999, the Great Pierogi Race began as an animated race on the scoreboard, as the different characters ran around the City of Pittsburgh. Now, the participants run 280 yards around PNC Park, and since its inception the team has added more funny characters to the mix, including Penny Pizza, the second female competitor, in 2017.

In total, there have been seven characters that have participated in the race, and all of them have done their fair share of winning. The characters are Potato Pete, Bacon Burt, Pizza Penny, Sauerkraut Saul, Cheese Chester, Jalapeno Hannah and Oliver Onion.

While fans inside PNC Park get to see this hilarious race every home game, the Great Pierogi Race also takes its show on the road. Once a year, the characters travel to Milwaukee to take on the Sausages, as well as to Washington to race the Presidents. In fact, the Presidents even make a trip to Pittsburgh, making this a National League battle as well.
