Chicago Cubs: The Curse of the Billy Goat
There are very few weirder stories in the history of Major League Baseball than the Curse of the Billy Goat. It all started in 1945, when Billy Goat Tavern owner William Sianis was forced to leave Game 4 of the 1945 World Series due to his goat’s odor offending fellow patrons of the game.
While being forced out, Sianis declared the Cubs should no longer win. The Cubs would go on to lose the World Series to the Detroit Tigers, and it would be a long time before they would even appear in the Fall Classic.
In fact, the Cubs would not go back to a World Series until the 46th anniversary of Sianis’ death, when they beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2016 National League Championship Series. Chicago would go on to win the World Series that year, erasing a championship drought that lasted 108 years.
In between championships, the Cubs came close so many times, which brought even more power to this supposed curse. Now, the Cubs are one of the better teams in Major League Baseball, but this curse will forever go down as one of the more historically prominent in baseball history.
