4. San Jose Sharks

After a rough stretch in the first round, Martin Jones has turned things around over the course of these playoffs as the Sharks head into a Game 7 against the Colorado Avalanche. A second trip to the Stanley Cup Final in the last four seasons would secure Jones’ place as San Jose’s goaltender, but it’s still worth wondering if he can get them over the hump. He’s also under contract through the 2023-24 season, with a $5.75 million cap hit each year.

As Jones struggled in the regular season, and in the middle of San Jose’s first-round series against Vegas, coach Peter DeBoer remained committed to starting him due to have no better option to go to (Aaron Dell). It’s easy to say Lundqvist would not a part-time player, due to his salary and name, but in pursuit of a Stanley Cup he may willing take whatever role is required.

It’s safe to say San Jose is in win-now mode, with their top four cap hits for next season on Logan Couture (age 30), Brent Burns (age 34), Marc-Edouard Vlasic (age 32) and Evander Kane (somehow still only going to be 28) and at least limited no-move clauses on all four. But they’ve also got some cap space to consider playing with ($25.3 million), and a 2020 first-round pick to consider sending to the Rangers for Lundqvist.

It’s at best unclear if Lundqvist would wave his no-move clause for San Jose. But on the surface, his goals would seemingly align nicely with the franchise’s over the next couple years.
