Nintendo announced a surprise Nintendo Direct to highlight new features coming to Super Mario Maker 2.

When Super Mario Maker 2 was announced in February for the Switch, fans were looking forward to creating new fun and challenging levels. Super Mario Maker 1 allowed players to create their own levels for Mario to complete. The game was well received on the Wii U, and fans are ecstatic for a new version on the Switch.

Nintendo has already released info about the new Mario Maker game, but we are excited to see new features from the Nintendo Direct. The Super Mario Maker 2 Direct shows new tools, features, levels, and enemies.  Read about them below.

What We Already Know About Super Mario Maker 2

We know that the premise is the same. Players will get to build their own Mario levels using features from old Mario side scrollers, including Super Mario World 3D and share them online. The new features will make an already infinite amount of level designs even larger and more diverse.

Gameplay elements such as snow, night, jungle, space, cloud and desert themes will be included. Other features include:

  • New enemies such as Porcupuffer, Ant Trooper, Stingby Bees, Piranha Creeper, Bonzai Bill, Skipsqueak, fireproof Piranha Plant and more.
  • Giant blocks, snake blocks, rock blocks, purple “crystal” blocks, on/off blocks, giant coins, coin counter, and more.
  • Water in levels, rising water, slopes, gusts of winds, vertical scrolling, climbing ability, tilting levels, and more.
  • Possibly Luigi, Toad, and other playable characters.

With all these new features and levels, the online community will thrive. The Wii U had a small fan base and because of that Mario Maker 1 did not have the community involvement Nintendo hoped for. The popularity of the Switch and Mario Maker 2 should change that.

What We Learned From The Mario Maker 2 Nintendo Direct

The direct highlighted a variety of new gameplay elements. New updates include:

  • Hide enemies in blocks, and stack enemies.
  • Angry Sun chasing Mario.
  • Turn the sun into a moon turns day into night and hitting it wipes out enemies. Night theme changes course conditions such as low gravity and different items.
  • Seesaws that tilt under Mario.
  • Swinging Claw to move over obstacles.
  • Customize the scroll speed and start spot including vertical scroll.
  • Ride in Dry Bones shell to play dead or sail in lava.
  • 30, 50 or 100 giant coin.
  • New sound effects for enemies and course music.
  • Creating courses with friends using co-op mode.
  • Set up goals for each level such as “Collect a mushroom.”
  • New hazards like tornados, icicles, and conveyor belts.

There is a new Story Mode where Mario helps Peach rebuild her castle featuring 100 new courses.

Super Mario 3D World theme allows you to make different courses and use different costumes such as Cat Mario. This introduces features such as clear pipes, mushroom trampolines, and warp boxes.

Course World is the online hub where players can share their courses with an online subscription. You can find new or popular courses, or search to find courses. If other players like your courses you earn Maker Points, and you can customize your avatar.

Course World introduces a multiplayer mode where you can play with people across the world. Winning courses raises your online ranking. You also play locally with your friends. You can even be Mario, Luigi Toad or Toadette.

All these new features will allow Super Mario Maker 2 players to create levels that are bigger and better than ever before. The game is expected to release on June 28th for the Nintendo Switch, only a couple of weeks after E3.
