He’s wrestled for many promotions under many different names. These days he goes by Cody, and he’s also known as Executive Vice President of All Elite Wrestling.

The son of a son-of-a-plumber, Cody Rhodes has been one of the catalysts behind a movement that is redefining the landscape of professional wrestling. On the heels of All In, one of the most highly successful independent wrestling events ever promoted, Cody along with Matt and Nick Jackson (a.k.a. The Young Bucks) went one step further with the formation of the All Elite Wrestling promotion.

With the backing of billionaire entrepreneurs Tony and Shahid Khan behind them, AEW has been growing larger every day, picking up talent like a runaway snowball. On May 15 it was announced that WarnerMedia had signed a deal with AEW to air a weekly wrestling show on TNT Network.

Cody spoke with news outlet Variety immediately after the announcement and made a point that AEW would be an alternative to other wrestling promotions.

"“For many years throughout my youth and plenty of other fans’ youths, pro wrestling has been essentially just one company and that’s not really the case. I want to be the sports-centric alternative in the pro wrestling world and I think we’re on a good path to get there.”"

More from AEW

The years Cody speaks of aren’t just as a fan. He has over 10 years as an active competitor in the ring wrestling for promotions such as WWE, Ring of Honor, TNA and NJPW. During his career, he’s won multiple championships and had some of the most memorable matches in the industry. On May 25 in Las Vegas, Cody will face off against his brother Dustin Runnels (a.k.a. Goldust) at AEW’s Double or Nothing event.

Without dedicated television time in place to promote AEW yet, Cody and The Young Bucks have turned to online resources like YouTube where under the name Nightmare Family they run a weekly series, The Road to Double or Nothing, as well as Being the Elite.

If you said Cody would be the guy to usher in a wrestling promotion that could rival WWE, it might have been easy to initially doubt the success of such an endeavor. But with a stacked roster, and more names joining everyday, it seems as though Cody Rhodes is someone you can bet on. He’s just as savvy backstage and in the business side of pro wrestling as he is in the ring.
