Dallas Wings: Is ownership doing something that’s holding back success on the court?

It’s been a pretty astonishing skid for the Wings, going back into their time as the Tulsa Shock: the last time they won 20 or more games in a season was all the way back in 2008 when Bill Laimbeer led the Detroit Shock to their third WNBA championship. Since then, eight of the other 11 teams have at least made it to the Finals, with the Wings joining the Liberty, Sun, and Aces as the only teams to strike out over that time. Plus, the Wings’ regular early selection in the draft has returned remarkably little production for the team: alongside one-year bust Evelyn Akhator, Dallas has traded away Shavonte Zellous, Riquna Williams, Odyssey Sims, Amanda Zahui B., and now Aerial Powers all before they could play their primes in a Wings uniform. Brian Agler’s resignation from the Sparks was manna from above for the Wings, who are being led by an established WNBA winner for the first time since Laimbeer. Still, Agler’s arrival didn’t seem to deter the mercurial star Liz Cambage from wanting a way out of Dallas as soon as possible. The franchise needs to take a long look in the mirror and figure out where their process is falling short compared to other teams.
