2019 NBA Mock Draft: A crazy lottery throws everything into question
The 247 Sports site covering North Carolina got an extensive one-on-one interview with White at the combine, and it was pretty enlightening about White’s experience in the pre-draft process so far.
Here are a few of the better questions:
"“Are you a point guard, shooting guard, or a guard? I’m a point guard. Do you think you can bring the best of both shooting guard and point guard traits? I definitely feel like I can. Naturally I think I’m more of a point guard, with the ball in my hands, but I’ve played both positions. Why was it important to you to come to the Combine? What did you hope to show teams? Just to show them what type of guy I am, that wherever I land I’m coming in and I’m ready to work, and whatever role I get I’ll play it to the fullest. And what are teams looking to see from you? Definitely using my change of speed, I’ve been working on that a lot in workouts the past month – use my speed to my advantage, let the game come to me and it’ll slow it down for me. How big of an issue do you think the adjustment to the NBA three-point line will be? I’ve been shooting it well in the workouts. I’ve always had deep range so I feel that’s not an adjustment for me at all. What do you consider the strengths of your game? I feel like my speed, shot-making ability, how well I can score the ball. I’m a competitor, I have the will to win – at the end of the day it’s all about winning games.”"
White is more of a project than you’d think if teams are expecting him to become a starting-caliber point guard right away. He’s not a very versatile player and isn’t a great halfcourt playmaker. Teams like Chicago or Phoenix that are desperate for a point guard should probably look elsewhere, but this shallow draft could dictate otherwise.
