NBA Draft 2019: 5 targets for the Detroit Pistons
By Ian Levy
1. Kevin Porter Jr., Guard, USC
Porter Jr. may be one of the riskiest prospects in the Pistons range. His upside is incredibly high, with a 6-foot-6 frame, good quickness and leaping ability, solid off-the-dribble creation ability and potential as a finisher, pull-up shooter and spot-up threat. There aren’t a ton of players in this draft with the ability to become a three-level scorer and Porter Jr. is definitely one of them. If he comes anywhere close to making good on this ability over the next two or three seasons, he would give the Pistons a dynamic win scoring threat the likes of which they just don’t have on the roster right now.
However, Porter Jr. is risky because of all the shaky possessions that came in-between the flashy shot-making and highlight finishes. He is a long way to go in reading a defense and decision-making on the drive and in the pick-and-roll. Porter Jr. is not the only player for whom a lack of feel is the difference between a bench role and a starring one but it creates a lot of variance in the range of outcomes for him. He could be a player who does everything well on offense. But right now, there’s not that one thing the Pistons could count on definitely translating. However, if Detroit decides they need to swing for the fences with this pick, they can’t take a much bigger cut than Porter Jr.
