Colton Welker

The Colorado Rockies are likely going to have to outscore their opponents night in and night out. Just about every pitcher is having a bad season, and like we said before, many of the pitchers in the Minor Leagues are struggling themselves. This would be the first step into trying to outscore everyone.

Colton Welker is currently in AA, and on paper probably needs another year before he’s ready for the Major Leagues. However, he is showing he has a knack about getting on base no matter where he plays. He currently sports a .315 average over 49 games. One would like him to walk a little more (he has 15 walks against 30 strikeouts), but there are a lot of other things he does well.

He would be a player who would make national headlines almost immediately. Not because of his play, but because of where he’s from. Welker went to high school at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the same high school as Anthony Rizzo, and the same school that lost 17 innocent lives last year. Maybe this emotional happening is pushing him to play better than he has before, but either way it’s a headline.

Welker can get on base today if called upon. He mostly plays third base, so he’d have to find a different role unless Nolan Arenado gets hurt. He’s played some first base this season, so maybe he can share some time with Daniel Murphy. Either way, if he can come up and hit, especially on the road, he will make a difference on this team. This one is a long shot, but if he gets said shot he can do something with it.
