46. Hamburg: 1982/83

Like Villa the season before, Hamburg didn’t generate a lot of buzz as winners in 1983. This was a functional team, but one not exactly short of inspiration thanks to rock-solid defender Manfred Kaltz and midfield workhorse Felix Magath.

The latter’s goal settled a forgettable final against a superior Juventus team that lost its collective nerve on the big stage. While any victory over the Bianconeri of this era merits plaudits, the rest of Hamburg’s winning run wasn’t littered with powerhouse teams.

Dynamo Berlin were edged past in the first round, before a similarly tight affair against Real Sociedad in the last four. This was one of those times when an inferior team triumphed where a previously stronger version had failed. Hamburg were better when Kaltz and Magath were buoyed by Kevin Keegan’s brilliance in a losing effort against Nottingham Forest in 1980.
