Here’s how the MLB Draft is going to shake out this year (probably)

26. Arizona — Greg Jones SS UNC-Wilmington

Jones has some similarities to Nico Hoerner, who was drafted by the Cubs last year out of Stanford. He’s a terrific all-around prospect, but he may not have a dominant trait. He can run (he had 42 steals this season) and good on-base skills (.491). But expecting any serious increase in power may be asking too much.

27. Chicago Cubs — Hunter Barco LHP Bolles High (Florida)

Barco is your prototype tall, skinny lefty (6-4, 185) who overwhelmed high school hitters to the tune of two strikeouts an inning as a senior. He also had some control issues that were typical and doesn’t have the best command. However, Barco is an intelligent player who will likely figure it out … if some team wants to buy him out of his commitment to Florida.

28. Milwaukee — Logan Davidson SS Clemson

Davidson is the picture of consistency over his three years at Clemson, hitting 12, 15 and 15 HRs over each season with an average .286 and .293 each year. That’s an admirable trait. It may not make him much more than a utility player in the majors. Think Ryan Flaherty, another former first-round pick who has had a solid-yet-unspectacular career.

29. Oakland — Gunnar Henderson SS Morgan Academy (Alabama)

Henderson is an excellent all-around athlete who also pitched in high school. But his future is at short and he’s one of seven expected to go in the first round. He’s 6-foot-3 and hits from the left side, reminding a lot of scouts of Corey Seager at the prep level. He has the arm and athletic ability to stick in the middle of the infield and still has yet to turn 18 at the time of the draft.

30. New York Yankees — Keoni Cavaco 3B Eastlake High (Calif.)

Cavaco is the player who is most on the rise right now on many draft boards and some people believe he could go in the top 15. He was projected to go early in the second round earlier in the process. If there’s another correction, he could slip back down to the end of the first round and the Yankees would surely nab him at this point.
