How many Tonys is To Kill A Mockingbird nominated for? The Harper Lee adaptation was one of the most talked-about plays during the latest Broadway season, so it was expected to be a major player at the 2019 Tony Awards.

And it is—to an extent. Aaron Sorkin’s stage version of the classic novel earned nine nominations at this year’s Tonys, which is nothing to turn up one’s nose at. However, it was missing from some categories, too.

Most notably, Jeff Daniels is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for starring as Atticus Finch. That’s no surprise, given that Daniels has received rave reviews since taking on the iconic role of the small-town lawyer.

Only two of the three performers co-starring with Daniels were nominated, though. Gideon Glick and Celia Keenan-Bolger are up for Tonys as Actor and Actress in a Featured Role, respectively, for playing Dill Harris and Scout Finch. Will Pullen, who portrayed Scout’s brother Jem, was not given a nomination.

Director Bartlett Sher is a nominee for Best Direction of a Play, while To Kill A Mockingbird‘s nominations also include Best Sound Design (Scott Lehrer), Best Lighting Design (Jennifer Tipton), Best Costume Design (Ann Roth) and Best Scenic Design (Miriam Buether).

But Sorkin isn’t a Tony Awards nominee for his excellent adaptation, and in a massive shock, the Tonys also decided not to give To Kill A Mockingbird a Best Play nomination. How a production can be so critically acclaimed and financially successful, and yet not be considered as one of the best plays of the season, is a debacle that would give Atticus Finch a headache.
