Julian Weigl

Thomas Tuchel has also worked with Julian Weigl in the past at Borussia Dortmund, and Weigl remains an effective squad player for the Bundesliga’s second-place team. On top of that, Tuchel has admitted interest in signing the 23-year-old center midfielder, who could help replace Adrien Rabiot ahead of considerable interest in the current starter.

Weigl is more of a backup-quality player for PSG, since he doesn’t even start ahead of Axel Witsel or Thomas Delaney at Dortmund. Last season, he mostly played at center back for Dortmund, spelling Abdou Diallo or Manuel Akanji whenever BVB’s defense was bit by the injury bug.

As a center back, Weigl acquitted himself well, snapping into tackles and making wise last-gasp decisions. His versatility could be huge for PSG, who would benefit from the ferocity Weigl brings to the center of the pitch. Though Weigl isn’t a physically strong player, he’s tough and shows no fear when going up against the strongest players in the Bundesliga.

Likely expendable from Dortmund’s perspective, Weigl looks like a better fit for PSG on paper and would be a cheap depth signing for the ambitious French club. PSG usually have their eyes on splashier players, such as James or Eriksen, but Weigl would be a smart signing who could prove to be an asset for Tuchel. And at 23, Weigl’s best years are definitely ahead of him.

Historically, Weigle has shined in the Champions League and Europa League, so the depth he’d provide in those competitions could prove to be especially valuable for PSG.
