MLB Power Rankings: Phillies lose McCutchen, Twins beat Rays and Marlins get out of the basement

2. Houston Astros, 42-20, 1st in the AL West (ranked 3rd last week)
Winners of five straight and eight of their last 10 games, the Astros are the best team in the American League, when healthy. Sadly, Houston just added Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa to the IL, joining George Springer who’s still out dealing with a hamstring strain. But with the way Alex Bregman has hit this season, Houston might be alright.
The 25-year-old 3B has 17 home runs and a .951 OPS on the year and is tied for the team lead in RBI with Springer, at 43. But the Astros’ strength has been their pitching, both in the rotation and bullpen, and it’s tough to find a better group at the moment. With the injuries piling up, it does force the Astros to rely more on some younger, unestablished players while the trio of Houston starters recover.
1. Los Angeles Dodgers, 43-19, 1st in the NL West (ranked 2nd last week)
The Dodgers pitching staff is first in ERA, WHIP and K/BB since April 25, as only the Rays and Astros have (just barely) out-pitched their staff on the year in those categories. On offense, only the Twins have scored more runs on the season, as the Dodgers continue to score runs at a high rate despite Cody Bellinger’s home run pace slowing down.
The Dodgers have won nine of their last 10 games and are finishing up a series with the Diamondbacks before starting a weekend series with the Giants. Expect the Dodgers to stay on top for another week as they face two sub-par teams in the Giants and the Angels.
