3. Did the Chiefs choose wisely at the running back position?

For a while, it looked like the Chiefs had found a steal at the running back position by taking Kareem Hunt in the third round of the 2017 Draft. Hunt won the rushing title as a rookie and was poised for a solid follow up season before video surfaced of him assaulting a woman during the offseason, essentially forcing the Chiefs to release him.

That left the Kansas City backfield in the hands of Spencer Ware and Damien Williams, with the latter proving to be more explosive and earning the lion’s share of the reps. Williams’ performance led the Chiefs to let Ware leave in free agency this spring, instead signing Carlos Hyde to form a time share with Williams.

Hyde has always been a talented runner going back to his time with the 49ers, but he looked lost in 2018. In 172 carries for the Browns and Jaguars, Hyde averaged only 3.3 yards per carry and scored just five touchdowns, creating a fair concern about whether his best days are behind him.

There also worries about Williams, who was a completely average performer for four years in Miami before bursting onto the scene with Kansas City at the end of the season. If Williams reverts back to his previous form, the Chiefs could have some serious issues in the backfield.

Kansas City passed on opportunities to add some more explosive players in free agency, watching guys like Le’Veon Bell and Tevin Coleman sign elsewhere. Their faith in Williams played a role in that choice, and the Chiefs have to hope that he can deliver.
