MLB rumors: 5 players Cubs needs to trade for
3. Asdrubal Cabrera, 3B Texas Rangers
Ben Zobrist may not come back this season and if the team decides they want something more than Neil Walker as a fill-in, then Asdrubal Cabrera should be considered.
No, Cabrera hasn’t played any second base this season. But he played 795 innings at that position last year between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies.
Defensively, the team may be giving up a bit with Cabrera playing there. However, he makes up for the plays he doesn’t create defensively with his bat.
Cabrera is scorching hot right now after he slumped through April and May. In June, he is slashing .412/.487/.588 with one homer and seven RBI. Overall, he has driven in 38 with 10 homers in 57 games this season.
The switch-hitter is still a versatile player, as he can play third as well as second base. Over the last four seasons he has hit at a .272 clip with 70 homers and 234 RBI. He has also hit 23 homers in two of those seasons.
Cabrera is a solid player who could help the Cubs throughout the remainder of the season. Of course, his availability may not be known until later in the season as the Rangers currently hold a playoff position.
But if the Rangers falter and Cabrera becomes available, he would be a low-cost option.
