MLB rumors: 5 players Cubs needs to trade for
2. Adam Eaton, OF Washington Nationals
Without Bryce Harper, the Washington Nationals haven’t been able to make much noise in the NL East. Dave Martinez is on the hot seat, the bullpen has been a mess and they are currently in fourth place.
However, the club has played a bit better, only six games behind the first-place Phillies and Braves, but general manager Mike Rizzo still may elect to pawn off some players. Adam Eaton could be one of those players traded away.
Kyle Schwarber has hit for some power, but Albert Almora and Jason Heyward haven’t produced nearly enough for Maddon’s lineup.
Before anything can be done the dollar amount has to be considered here. Eaton is due a total of $8.4 million this season. Although, if the Cubs deem adding him a necessity, Eaton has two club options in 2020 and 2021.
Therefore, the Cubs can trade for Eaton and decline his option to make him a free agent this offseason. Or, they can take it year-by-year.
Regardless, Eaton would be a top-of-the-order bat for Maddon. In 2019, he is slashing .271/.356/.397 with six homers and 17 RBI. After a rough month of May, he is hitting .320 so far in June.
The corner outfielder can be a catalyst for the Cubs, and he would lengthen the lineup and give the team some additional production from their crop of outfielders.
