14. Jared Spurgeon

Age: 29
Position: D
Current Team: Minnesota Wild

Consistently regarded as one of the most underrated players in the NHL, Jared Spurgeon of the Minnesota Wild is an attractive commodity for his ability to combine offensive prowess with defensive responsibility on a consistent basis. And while it is not just probable, but surely plausible that most — if not all — organizations will at some point inquire about the defenseman’s availability, the Wild’s administrative body continues to maintain that locking up Spurgeon is one of its foremost priorities.

In short, the consensus is as follows. Spurgeon — like many others before him — has enjoyed his tenure in the North Star State, but his desire to win grows by the day. At 29, his window for success should be open for a while yet, but whether he would be willing to gamble on Minnesota — an organization consistently marked by a quality of falling short in the Stanley Cup playoffs — remains subject to debate.

The club is currently caught in the midst of highly public rumination over LW Jason Zucker’s future, whose agent, Eustace King, also represents Spurgeon. So if the worst case scenario becomes a troubling reality in the Land of 10,000 Lakes — already enveloped by frustration with coaching, bad contracts and questionable administrative decisions of late — and the team loses its argument for keeping Spurgeon, the right-shot D-man would then become one of the most desired targets for opposing executives to land.
