3. St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals could replace the currently-injured Adam Wainwright (hamstring) with Alex Reyes in their starting rotation shortly, and after a couple turns in the bullpen to try to get on track, Michael Wacha pitched six shutout innings against the Miami Marlins on Monday. Miles Mikolas (forearm) is a little banged up himself, but he is scheduled to make his next start against the Marlins Wednesday night without issue.

If not for a rough May (9-18 record), St. Louis would surely be closer than four games back in the NL Central and 3.5 back in the Wild Card race going into Wednesday. They will be a trade deadline buyer, and adding a veteran starting pitcher seems to be firmly on the radar. Before the Braves signed Dallas Keuchel, the Cardinals emerged as a rumored suitor.

Syndergaard is a clear step up from Keuchel, and the Cardinals would have to part with a prospect or two to get him. But they’d also add a 26-year-old ace (27 in August) to front their starting rotation for at least two more years, barring something unforeseen, so the acquisition price might not be a significant deterrent here.
