Is it the first, true direct sequel in the series?

When it comes to this series, true sequels are rare. There’s The Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks, which are supposed to continue the same storyline. Phantom Hourglass is probably the only true sequel in the series since it takes place months after the events of The Wind Waker. It’s also the same Link and Tetra exploring the same world.

As for Spirit Tracks, it takes place 100 years after the events of Phantom Hourglass. It’s a different incarnation of Link at that point, so it’s definitely a new era and a new game.

You can say Majora’s Mask is also a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time, but is it really? The game is set in an alternate reality. It is said to be the same Link, who’s searching for the fairy, Navi, after leaving concluding the events of Ocarina of Time. But, it takes place in Termina, not Hyrule. It’s also the weird one out in the series in terms of the characters and the setting. It’s unlike anything else Zelda related. The only thing that’s easily comparable to Ocarina of Time is the game engine, such as the textures, gameplay, and look of the characters, but that’s about it.

In all honesty, we may be wrong, but we think this upcoming sequel will be the first, true sequel in the series. From the trailer, it seems like the same Zelda and Link in the exact same Hyrule. In an interview with Game Informer, game director Eiji Aonuma states, “One of the reasons we wanted to create a continuation was because I wanted to revisit that Hyrule again and use that world again, while incorporating new gameplay and new story.”

As of right now, whether it’ll have some changes to Hyrule as a whole is yet to be determined. A new story will be conducted, of course. However, we aren’t sure if the land will change or whether or not we’ll be able to revisit some of the old areas from the first game.
