4. Who will lead the club in receptions this season?
A year ago, Zach Ertz not only paced the Philadelphia Eagles in catches but set an NFL record for receptions by a tight end for a season with 116 grabs. So is it logical to assume that he will lead the Birds in that department for a fourth consecutive season? The last time a player other than Ertz didn’t lead this team in catches was back in 2015 when wide receiver Jordan Matthews turned the trick.
The big news this offseason when it came to the wideout department was the return of deep threat DeSean Jackson via a trade with the Buccaneers. He spent the first six seasons of his NFL career with the Eagles before being released by the club in 2014 and joining the Washington Redskins. Another addition is rookie
J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, a second-round pick from Stanford who has opened some eyes this offseason. Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor remain in the fold, although the latter has been the subject of trade rumors this offseason. Last October, the Eagles swung a trade for productive performer Golden Tate. But he latched on with the rival New York Giants this offseason.
Even with the ability of Jackson to open up the offense and the continued production of Jeffery and company, Etrz will still be the focal point of Carson Wentz’s throws. Don’t be surprised if second-year tight end Dallas Goedert (33 receptions for 334 yards and 4 touchdowns) sees more passes. But it’s the veteran at the position that once again figures to be the leader in catches.
