The worst NBA Draft picks for every team
19. Phoenix Suns: Josh Jackson
It’s not quite as fresh as calling Mo Bamba a bust, but this still feels a little ripe.
It also feels more appropriate. With Bamba, we have no idea if any of the guys the Magic reasonably bypassed are going to turn out to be any good.
DeAaron Fox, on the other hand, is a stud.
Heading into the 2017 draft, the Suns already had Devin Booker. They also had Eric Bledsoe, who at the time was the team’s point guard and nominal best player, signed for two more years at a fair price of $14.5 and $15 million per season. There was a world where the season got off to a fast start and Bledsoe could remain entrenched as the lead guard of both the present and the future.
And then, three games into the season, came perhaps the greatest tweet in NBA history (non-DeAndre Jordan Hostage Crisis edition). Bledsoe was dealt to the Bucks later in the year for a pick that will likely be a late 2020 first rounder.
Why does all this matter? Because had Phoenix realized Bledsoe wasn’t long for the valley, they may have taken Fox over Jackson, who was arrested this summer after trying to sneak into the VIP section of a concert. Good times.
Fox was then taken fifth and has the Kings primed to make a move in the West as soon as next season.
