Week-by-week predictions

Game 1: vs. James Madison

Though James Madison is certainly no slouch of an FCS opponent, Brown and the Mountaineers should be able to come out in Morgantown and secure an opening victory.

Result: Win

Game 2: at Missouri

Missouri is another program that will be experiencing a great deal of change from 2018 to 2019, so this game could be a toss-up. With West Virginia going on the road, however, they take a loss to go to 1-1 on the year.

Result: Loss

Game 3: vs. NC State

After this game was cancelled last season, we get to see it in Raleigh for 2019. NC State, in truth, is going to likely have a rough campaign and a hungry West Virginia team at home isn’t going to help them.

Result: Win

Game 4: at Kansas

Could the Kansas Jayhawks start to turn things around under Les Miles? Sure, but turning things around in Lawrence isn’t exactly a high bar to clear.

Result: Win

Game 5: vs. Texas

Getting to play the Longhorns in Morgantown is a gift from the schedule-makers but that doesn’t erase the fact that Texas should be the substantially better team in this matchup, thus leading to West Virginia’s second loss of the year.

Result: Loss

Game 6: vs. Iowa State

This is one that I went back and forth on considering the potential Brock Purdy showed last year for Iowa State. However, I’m giving Brown his first solid Big 12 win at home.

Result: Win

Game 7: at Oklahoma

Though the Mountaineers will be riding high after a win over the Cyclones, they’ll quickly be brought back to earth the following week when they go to Norman. Kendall is not going to have a great time against his former team.

Result: Loss

Game 8: at Baylor

The good news for West Virginia football in 2019 is that, though they do have to play in a strong Big 12, their toughest games are a bit spread out. With that, they rebound from the loss to the Sooners with a win in Waco.

Result: Win

Game 9: vs. Texas Tech

While I like the Matt Wells hire for Texas Tech, it’s hard not to be skeptical once again about what the Red Raiders’ ceiling in the Big 12 actually is. For my money, it’s lower than the Mountaineers’.

Result: Win

Game 10: at Kansas State

There are few reasons to have confidence in the Kansas State Wildcats in 2019 and, with the Mountaineers hopefully hitting their stride, they pick up another key win down the stretch.

Result: Win

Game 11: vs. Oklahoma State

Though the quarterback situation is a question mark in Stillwater to start the year, they should have things settled by the end of the year and Mike Gundy’s offense should hum past West Virginia.

Result: Loss

Game 12: at TCU

Unfortunately, Brown and West Virginia aren’t ready for a season finale against Gary Patterson’s team. They’ll already be bowl-eligible but the Mountaineers will end the regular season with two-straight losses.

Result: Loss

Final Record: 7-5 (4-4 in Big 12)
