Houston Texans: David Carr
The first ever NFL Draft pick of the Houston Texans was David Carr, a record-breaking quarterback from Fresno State. In his final season at the college level, Carr threw for over 4,800 yards and 46 touchdowns, establishing himself as the No. 1 prospect coming out that year.
The Texans did in fact take him first overall, and immediately decided that he would be their starting quarterback as a rookie. Carr’s career got started on a high note, as he beat fellow Texas team, the Dallas Cowboys, giving Texans fans hope that he would be the franchise quarterback for years to come.
However, Carr had one major issue during his time in Houston, and it really derailed his NFL career. From the beginning, Carr got no protection, and as a rookie, he was sacked 76 times, which just happened to be an NFL record. That trend would follow him his entire time as the starting quarterback in Houston.
When it comes to arm talent, Carr had all the markings of a guy who should have been a franchise quarterback in this league for 15 years. The Texans faithful are hoping that they have that guy now in Deshaun Watson, who has already taken his fair share of hits in a very young NFL career. For Carr, his run in Houston lasted only five seasons.
