Kansas City Chiefs: Matt Cassel

The story of Matt Cassel is one that saw him overcome a lot to make a lot of money in the NFL, but never really become the quarterback he looked to be back in 2008. In Week 1 of the 2008 NFL season, New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady went down with an ACL injury, and it was Cassel that took over the team.

Not only did Cassel play tremendous football for the Patriots, but he led then to ten wins, and showed that he could be a legitimate starting quarterback at the NFL level. A former seventh round draft pick of the team, Cassel would be traded alongside Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs the following offseason, as the Patriots got the No. 34 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft in return.

For Cassel, the pressure was on him to perform the way he did in New England, and while he had his moments, you have to think the fan base thinks they could have gotten more from him. Cassel led the team to the playoffs in his second season as the starter, but inconsistent play would dog him, and he would only spend four seasons with the team.

A Pro Bowl player in 2010, Cassel led the Chiefs to an AFC West title in that second season in Kansas City, but that would be the high point of his career with the team. The Chiefs gave him a $62.7 million contract to be the franchise quarterback, including $28 million guaranteed, but they only got one good season to show for it.
