WWE Stomping Grounds 2019: Preview and predictions
By Luke Norris
WWE Universal Championship Match
Seth Rollins (c) vs. Baron Corbin (Corbin gets to pick the special guest referee)
A rematch from Super ShowDown a couple of weeks ago, WWE Universal Champion Seth Rollins continues his summer-filler feud with Baron Corbin, who gets to pick the special guest referee here. Yeah, that’s selling tickets. Corbin has attempted to find someone, but Rollins is blocking everyone with his new best friend, the steel chair.
While this program has been better than expected, Corbin really is just a filler opponent at this point. The focus on Rollins and the title still more involves Brock Lesnar and his Money in the Bank briefcase, which is why they keep bringing Paul Heyman around to not let us forget about it. I don’t think Lesnar would lower himself to show up at a “B-level” pay-per-view like Stomping Grounds, but I guess you never know what his paycheck looks like.
Prediction: It doesn’t matter who the special guest referee ends up being here. Rollins isn’t losing the WWE Universal Championship to Corbin. There are a number of options for that referee spot, and I will admit to being a bit curious which direction is taken, but it’s likely going to be a disappointment in the end. It’s Rollins with the win.
Steel Cage Match for the WWE Championship
Kofi Kingston (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler
After losing the WWE Championship Match to Kofi Kingston in Jeddah, Dolph Ziggler immediately challenged the champ to a rematch in a steel cage, which Kingston was happy to accept as a fighting champion. See, that’s how easy it is to make a match make sense. Kingston has been wanting to be known as a fighting champion, he accepted a direct challenge instead of waiting for a contender to be named and we’re off. A steel cage match is usually the sign of a rivalry coming to an end, so this is likely the last we’ll see of these two going at it.
Prediction: This match has a great opportunity to be the match of the night and outside of Samoa Joe and Ricochet, this is probably the match I’m most looking forward to watching. Ziggler and Kingston have always had great chemistry in the ring together and adding the intensity of the cage brings a little extra tension. There should be some great spots here with some big, high-risk chances taken. Ziggler will get close but it won’t be enough as Kofimania rolls on with the victory.
