Fantasy Baseball: 5 waiver wire replacements for Frankie Montas
3. Zach Plesac, Cleveland Indians
Plesac, the nephew of former major league pitcher and MLB Network analyst Dan Plesac, made his major league debut May 28 against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park and acquitted himself well (5.1 innings, one run allowed on four hits). Over his last four starts, he has gone seven innings three times with a 2.73 ERA and a 24:9 K/BB ratio over that span.
Plesac gets a favorable matchup in his next scheduled start on Sunday. The Detroit Tigers entered Saturday’s action last in the American League in runs per game (3.57), home runs (63), total bases and OPS (.673), as well as second-to-last in batting average (.231) and on-base percentage (.292). As could be expected, they strike out a lot (fourth-most times in the AL) and walk very little (second-fewest times in the junior circuit).
With Corey Kluber (arm) still out, Mike Clevinger (ankle) going right back on the IL this past week and Carlos Carrasco (illness) sidelined indefinitely, Plesac’s spot in the Indians’ rotation looks perfectly secure. He is on the border for inclusion on this list, but a recent 14 percent drop in his ESPN ownership rate as of this writing secures his place.
