The Bachelorette: Grant on overcoming his fear of snakes, bromance with Dylan and more
Grant became a Bachelorette favorite before being sent home during last week’s episode. Here’s what he had to say about it.
From walking in the front door, hot dog in hand, making condiment puns to slowly working his way into our hearts, Grant was perhaps the most underrated contestant on Hannah’s season of The Bachelorette. Never one to shy away from a good side-eyed look, Grant became the go-to guy for funny reactions to the house drama.
Grant made the most of his time on The Bachelorette by spending quality time with Hannah, facing his biggest fear, making some new friends and starting a bromance that we wish we could have seen more of. It’s safe to say Hannah might have missed the boat on this one. Here’s to hoping we see a lot more of Grant in the future.
FanSided spoke to Grant about his untimely exit, the Luke drama, making friends on The Bachelorette and how neither one of us will be competing in the CrossFit Games any time in the foreseeable future. If there’s a lesson to be learned from this, it’s that we could all benefit from being a little more like Grant.

FanSided: Last Monday I wrote a post about how you were my new dark horse pick to win. Then you went home. I apologize for the jinx. As a sports fan, I should know better. What do you think went wrong?
Grant: (Laughs) I don’t think anything really went wrong, it was just kind of the end of the road for myself, apparently. Obviously, Hannah had great guys to choose from out of that crew: Pilot Pete, Jed, Tyler, Big Mike, Connor, Dylan. Those are all just great guys, so I don’t take anything negative away from it.
The only thing that kind of bummed me out after watching last Monday night’s episode unfold was seeing Hannah not give Luke a rose on their one-on-one and then him coming back to the house. When you watch that unfold you start to wonder if Luke wasn’t there at the rose ceremony — if he would have gone home like he was supposed to, would I have received a rose? Maybe. Maybe not. So that’s the only frustration. All in all, I think Hannah and I had a great relationship during the time that we did spend together and I don’t take anything negative away. It was the end of my road.
Yeah, that makes sense. And I don’t think you were the only person frustrated during that moment (Luke returning). Speaking of your relationship with Hannah, what was your favorite moment with her that wasn’t shown on TV?
There were quite a few of them! We had a lot of fun together during the Highland Games in Scotland but I think the funnest moment I had with her was when we did the photo shoot and I had the python around my neck. I’ve always been scared of snakes. We were talking, when I had the snake on me, and she was telling me to face my fears. She was totally right. That was the funnest moment, for me, taking the snake and having it on the two of us and playing with it. That was fun relationship building, there.
Props to you for going through with it. Putting a python around your neck while having a fear of snakes is no joke! How has it been on social media since the show’s aired? Are you getting a lot of love?
Yeah, I just look at some of them and kind of chuckle. Some of them are like “Oh my God, I would have picked you over Luke” or “I don’t think Hannah knows what she’s missing. You seem so fun and normal.” Then there are some funnier ones too, like “Oh, Grant, Now that we know you’re not with Hannah, why don’t you hit me up?” (Laughs) “Come to Texas, come to Florida.” It’s been pretty entertaining.
(Laughs) Sounds like fun! I was skimming through a few of them and came across one that made me laugh. You did a really good job of staying out of the drama in the house and this comment made light of that. I’m paraphrasing, but it was along the lines of “Grant is my favorite because it seems like he is just sitting on the couch watching the show like the rest of us, but he’s actually there.” Did it feel that way sometimes with all the chaos surrounding Luke in the house?
Luke really knew how to make things awkward with some of his comments. Sometimes I would double take like “What are you talking about?” He’s an interesting guy. I didn’t really get a whole lot of time to sit and talk with him. I was obviously focused on Hannah and the time we had together. Ever since the Rhode Island thing (The drama between Luke P and Luke S) we knew there was something off — Well, I had the vibe that there was something a little off with the guy.
It’s safe to say you probably aren’t alone in thinking that. You had in your ABC bio that you don’t care much for CrossFit. Did Luke bring up CrossFit all the time?
Nah, I don’t think he was that bad about it. I did ask him about it at one point. I don’t really have anything negative to say about CrossFit — I have friends of mine who do it, I just don’t understand why guys want to train for that. That’s just my personal opinion. What are you accomplishing? You’re not getting paid.
It’s training to exercise better.
It’s training to exercise better! If you’re getting paid for like, a role, well yeah I would understand that. I guess it’s just a different goal set from what I see. I don’t know why somebody wants to spend two hours a day, five days inside a gym competing for nothing. (Laughs)
What about the other guys? Who would you say you were you closest with of the group?
From the get-go, Dylan, Jed and I meshed pretty well. Tyler and I meshed pretty well. Mike was funnier than heck, we had a good time. Connor S was a cool guy to talk to. He’s a little more on the quiet side. Dylan – for crying out loud — he was the guy who wrapped his arm around me towards the end there, in the last episode. Him and I had a running joke that he was my little brother. I’m about six or seven years older than him.

You and Dylan had a nice little bromance going! We saw a little bit of it near the end so it’s nice to hear that it was a thing.
Honest to God when I saw that — you get caught up in what’s going on and everything and forget a lot of what you do in there. Then some of the stuff you see on TV you think “Oh God I remember that!” (Laughs) So sitting back and watching it all unfold, it’s pretty funny. That’s a good example. I didn’t look like I knew what was going on I was just so intrigued with what Luke was talking about, trying to put two and two together.
(Laughs) One of those in-the-moment things that people pick up on and love seeing.
Someone on Twitter sent me a clip of basically all of my facial expressions. It was near the end of the video when I was trying to figure out what Luke was talking about and Dylan had his arm wrapped around me. I thought that was kind of funny.
I think that two-minute clip was better than episode 5.
(Laughs) Well thanks, Bruin, I appreciate that.
The Bachelorette airs Monday evenings at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
