USWNT vs. Spain 5 standouts: Crystal Dunn is an excellent left back
Spain CB Irene Paredes
While Aly Wagner may have been frustrated by Irene Paredes fouls and physical play, this approach to the game was critical in setting the tone for Spain and allowing them to push the USWNT the way that they did. Paredes is one of the best center backs in the world, and she was all over the pitch in this game. Not only did she shut down star striker Alex Morgan defensively, but she also pushed up the field in the final 15 minutes when her team was down 2-1, working hard to find that equalizer.
United States fans were happy when Paredes was finally booked, but their frustration with Paredes tells the story of how good the PSG standout was in this game. She was one of the best players on a field full of world-class talent, and there can be absolutely no doubt that Spain’s captain is one of the best defenders around.
United States RW Tobin Heath
Easily one of the most entertaining athletes to watch in world football, Tobin Heath is on unplayable form right now. It only takes one lapse in concentration for Heath to burn an entire defense, as her game-sealing goal against Sweden and her work to create the USWNT’s first goal against Spain can testify.
Heath beat Spain’s normally perfect offside trap, latched onto a great ball from center back Abby Dahlkemper, and made a deadly cut inside. Spain couldn’t deal with Heath’s quickness and dribbling ability, as superstar center back Mapi Leon clipped Heath’s foot. This led to Rapinoe converting a penalty for the game’s first goal.
Throughout the game, Heath caused problem after problem for Spain’s defense, stretching one of the best back four’s in the world. Though Heath didn’t create any other goals, her hard work once again stood out. Heath is one of the best football players of this generation and should be celebrated as such.
