20. Los Angeles Dodgers: Gavin Lux, SS, Indian Trail Academy (WI)

Shortstop was a very weak position in the 2016 draft, but the Dodgers appear to have gotten a huge steal with Gavin Lux at the 20th slot. Lux was a bit of a late bloomer out of Wisconsin, which made for a high upside profile. The Dodgers could afford to give him some time to develop and fill out.

The first two seasons of Lux’s professional career were good enough to support his first-round selection, but he still needed to show more to break through to elite prospect status. He hit .244/.331/.362 with 27 stolen bases in 2017, before having an elite offensive season in 2018. Lux was the best offensive shortstop in the minor leagues last season, hitting .324/.399/.514 with 27 doubles, eight triples, 15 home runs and 13 stolen bases. He added strength to his frame and adjusted his swing to generate more loft.

Lux has picked up right where he left off in 2018 through his first 64 games with Double-A Tulsa. He is hitting .313/.375/.521 with 13 home runs and 37 RBI. He is now ranked as a top-50 overall prospect and top-10 shortstop prospect. Lux had an advanced approach to hitting when he was drafted, but he has found a power stroke to send himself on the path to MLB superstardom.

If there is one mark against Lux, it is on the defensive side of the coin. He moves well and has a strong arm from shortstop, but has been plagued by spotty accuracy on his throws across the diamond. A move to second base may be in the works as he reaches the big leagues, but that hardly dulls his shine as a potential 20-20 threat.
