20 best sitcom squads we want to be friends with
By Reed Gaudens
10. Boy Meets World
Members: For many ’90s kids, there are no sitcom friend groups as iconic as Cory (Ben Savage), Topanga (Danielle Fishel), Shawn (Rider Strong), and Eric (Will Friedle) on Boy Meets World. They were so close that nothing, not even college, could separate these kids from being glued to each other’s sides. Even honorary member of the crew Mr. Feeny (William Daniels) followed them to higher education. Later on in the series, they would be joined by new friends Angela (Trina McGee-Davis), Rachel (Maitland Ward), and Jack (Matthew Lawrence).
Memorable moments: Honestly, there has never been and never will be another show quite like Boy Meets World. Its point of view about family, friends, and the fine art of growing up can’t be replicated, not even in its Disney Channel sequel series Girl Meets World. How could any show top classic moments like the drama at the ski lodge, the horror-inspired episode featuring Jennifer Love Hewitt, and the requisite ’90s-sitcom trip to Disney World?
Running gags: Everyone knows and can quote on a dime some of Boy Meets World’s best running gags. From the way Eric said Mr. Feeny’s name (“Fee-hee-hee-hee-hee-ny!”) to the way that Cory said Topanga’s name, there were always fan-favorite callbacks that could secure the laugh. Also, Morgan’s absence and recasting became a meta-joke for the sitcom, and Cory’s hilarious exclamation of the word “underpants” lives on as a series-best quote.
Key episodes: “Cory’s Alternative Friends,” “Danger Boy,” “The Happiest Show on Earth,” “A Long Walk to Pittsburgh,” “Boy Meets Real World,” “Raging Cory,” “Heartbreak Cory,” “And Then There Was Shawn,” “If You Can’t Be With the One You Love…,” “Prom-ises, Prom-ises,” “Road Trip,” “Seven the Hard Way”
